Problem with Exhaust Manifold gasket. 3 Years ago Karma: 0
My scoot\'s support bolts that hold the exhaust in place came loose
during a long ride. Thus the tension was put onto the only remaining
nuts that hold the exhaust manifold in place. The hot gases burned up
the gasket and also pitted the manifold. The flang on the pipe is OK
though. I found a replacement gasket an modified it to work. I than put
black High temp (500F) silicone gasket to fill in the gaps. Waited
24hrs. But it didn\'t hold. Should I try something different, maybe no
gasket and just silicone? Maybe I should use the red stuff that goes to
700F?

Hi Sanford:
What type of gasket do you have? Is it the copper ring or a flat
composition type? The ring gaskets are notorious for working loose.
Stan Jeesup at www.oregonvintage.co m recommends switching to the oval
flat gasket which can be done by making sure the flange is bent back
straight, and adding lock washers to the manifold bolts. Maybe that
will work for you. He sells both types of gasket on his web site.
Clive.

Most bikes have either asbestos rings, plain or metal sheilded. Others
have copper rings. All work well provided the bolts are tight. http:// www.partsforscooters .com has a good selection. Silicone will not
stand up. Get the right ring and keep the bolts tight. Socket head cap
screws with lockwire holes work best for keeping the screws from
loosening. High temp loctite also works on the screws.

The gasket was/is the oval composite type. I found a replacement for
$1.25 at a lawn mower service center. It looked identical to the
original (as best as I could tell).
Becouse the flange is no longer flat against the manifold, the gases
burn right through the new one. Now I\'m back to square one. I\'m not
sure as to how to re-align the flange w/o possibly damaging it. It is
not displaced alot, just a few degrees. But it is enough that the new
gasket will not hold the gases in place. I\'m thinking that using a
flexable silicone style may be a better option. What do you think?
Thanks
Sanford

take a small mallett and tap the flange out flat and level like it\'s
supposed to be and use teh oval gasket and then put some lock washers on the
nuts to hold them tight from viberating loose.

I really doubt that silicone will hold up. I\'d say its not worth the
risk of having it fail and do further damage. Is the exhaust port
surface smooth enough to make a seal? If it is, I would suggest you
try to hammer out the flange to get it flat. If you can\'t make it
work, you are no worse off since the only other alternative would be
to replace the pipe/flange. Do a Google and eBay search for GY6
exhaust pipe. Most of the Chinese clones have a pipe that bolts to
the muffler so you don\'t need the whole thing. They are pretty cheap
too. See here for example: http:// www.extremescooters. biz/products.asp? URLcategory=Roketa_G Y6_Exhaust
